Description
The Courbet n°5 is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker designed by Davis Acoustics, a French manufacturer. It is installed in pairs in a stereo system and covers the entire audible spectrum thanks to its configuration of three separate drivers, each dedicated to a portion of the sound spectrum.
The bass section is handled by two 13 cm drivers with carbon fibre cones, a rigid material that promotes precise bass reproduction. The midrange, also 13 cm but with a Kevlar cone, takes over from 400 Hz up to 4,000 Hz, at which point the 28 mm silk dome tweeter handles the treble. This three-way arrangement limits the overlap zones between drivers. With a sensitivity of 90 dB and an impedance of 4-8 Ω, the speaker remains compatible with most integrated amplifiers, with a power handling of 100 W (160 W peak). The frequency response extends from 50 Hz to 25 kHz.

What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the two bass drivers deserve close inspection: hardened, cracked or detached foam or surrounds affect bass performance and may require reconditioning. Also check for signs of denting on the carbon and Kevlar cones, as well as the condition of the tweeter's silk dome, which is fragile and prone to damage from impacts. Finally, checking the bass-reflex port and the cabinet (veneer, corners, driver fixings) helps identify any signs of damp or poorly handled transport.
