Description
The Matisse HD is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, designed and manufactured in France by Davis Acoustics. It is intended for a carefully assembled stereo or hi-fi system, where it handles bass, midrange and treble reproduction within a single cabinet.
The bass is handled by two 13 cm woofers with carbon-cellulose cones, a combination that allows the speaker to reach down to 40 Hz while maintaining good power handling. The midrange relies on a 13 cm Kevlar 13KLV5 driver, a material renowned for its rigidity and thus for the precision it brings to voices and instruments. The 25 mm fabric dome tweeter extends the frequency response up to 23 kHz. The whole system offers a sensitivity of 91 dB, which makes it easier to drive with a moderately powered amplifier, for a stated impedance of 4 to 8 Ω. The crossover points, at 350 Hz and 3,500 Hz, divide the work between the three drivers.
With a power handling of 80 W RMS (120 W peak) and dimensions of 210 × 1020 × 290 mm for 23 kg, the Matisse HD is suited to a medium to large living room, where one seeks a floorstanding speaker capable of holding its own both visually and sonically, in its black lacquered finish.

What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the two woofers, around the edge of the carbon-cellulose cone, warrant a visual check: sagging or hardening results in soft or distorted bass. Also check the tweeter's fabric dome, which is prone to punctures and fingerprint marks, as well as the condition of the internal crossover, whose capacitors can drift with age. Finally, examine the black lacquered cabinet: scratches, corner chips or veneer lifting are common on this type of finish after a house move.
