Description
The Matisse is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, designed and made in France by Davis Acoustics. It is placed at the front of a stereo hi-fi system and covers the entire audible spectrum thanks to its three-driver configuration.
The bass is handled by two 13 cm woofers with carbon-cellulose cones, allowing bass extension down to 40 Hz. The midrange relies on a 13KLV5 13 cm driver with a Kevlar cone, a material known for its rigidity and its ability to reproduce nuances without excessive colouration. The top of the spectrum is handled by a 25 mm fabric dome tweeter, with a frequency response extending up to 23 kHz. The crossover points, at 350 Hz and 3,500 Hz, divide the work between the three drivers. What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the two carbon-cellulose woofers deserve careful inspection: hardened or cracked foam or rubber affects performance in the low frequencies. Also check the condition of the tweeter's fabric dome, which is prone to dents and marks from handling, as well as the midrange's Kevlar cone. The walnut cabinet, on a one-metre floorstanding format, may show chips, veneer lifting or warping of the rear panel around the bass-reflex port.
