The AVC-X2850H is a 7.2-channel Home Cinema AV receiver from Denon, designed to drive a complete audio-video installation: multichannel amplification, decoding of 3D audio formats and video signal handling up to 8K. It acts as the central hub of a home cinema system, connecting sources, speakers and a projector or television.
The unit features seven power amplifiers, with an output power of 95 watts per channel (8 Ω, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, THD 0.08%, 2 channels driven), rising to 125 watts per channel (6 Ω, 1 kHz, THD 0.07%) and then 150 watts per channel (6 Ω, 1 kHz, THD 1%, 1 channel driven). The accepted speaker impedance ranges from 4 to 16 ohms, allowing a good range of compatible speakers. On the decoding side, the unit supports Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Surround, Dolby Height Virtualization, DTS:X, DTS HD Master, DTS Neural:X, DTS Virtual:X, IMAX Enhanced and Auro 3D. The video section matches this level of performance with 8K/60 and 4K/120 passthrough on its HDMI ports, compatibility with HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR and BT.2020, as well as an HDMI-to-HDMI scaler up to 8K.
Connectivity includes six HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs, including three HDMI 2.1 inputs and one eARC output, four analogue RCA inputs, one PHONO MM input for a turntable, two optical digital inputs, two stereo RCA Pre Out outputs for a zone 2, two independent subwoofer outputs and one front-panel USB input. The unit also features Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatic calibration, ISF certification and bi-amplification capability. On the network and streaming side, it offers HEOS multiroom, Wi-Fi, two-way Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Roon Tested compatibility, TuneIn internet radio and voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri.

What to check before buying used
On an AV receiver of this generation, the front-panel rotary selector ribbon or knob and the HDMI input/output relays deserve a thorough test, including 4K/8K formats and eARC, as these are the first points of failure encountered. The power supply capacitors and filtering chokes bear the brunt of the power delivered by the seven amplifiers and can age on a heavily used unit, with a risk of hum or loss of dynamics on certain channels. Also check that the Wi-Fi/network module is still recognised and that the firmware still accepts updates, as some older models are no longer supported by the setup app.
