The AVC-X3800H is a home cinema AV receiver from Denon, designed to drive a complete multichannel setup. Equipped with 9 amplification channels, it can power up to 4 independent subwoofers and supports the immersive sound formats Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced and Auro-3D, with Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing to optimise traditional sources.
Its output power reaches 9x135 watts into 6 ohms, spread across 9 separate amplifier blocks, capable of driving demanding speakers in a large room. On the video side, the unit handles 8K/60 and 4K/120 signal pass-through on its HDMI connections, with CEC and eARC compatibility, as well as HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR and 4:4:4 Pure Color colorimetry in pass-through, ensuring a faithful image regardless of the source used.
Connectivity includes 6 HDMI inputs and 3 HDMI outputs, 5 analogue inputs, one MM phono input, 2 optical digital inputs and 2 coaxial, one zone 2 analogue multiroom output, 11.4 multichannel pre-amp outputs, 4 independent subwoofer outputs and one front-panel USB input. The integrated HEOS enables wireless streaming and multiroom, complemented by Wi-Fi, two-way Bluetooth and AirPlay 2.
This model is aimed at home cinema enthusiasts wishing to build an ambitious multichannel setup, up to 11.4-channel processing, with the option of using the unit in preamplifier mode or upgrading it to Dirac Live as an option. It will suit a dedicated room as well as a living room equipped with several subwoofers.

What to check before buying used
Test each amplification channel individually: on a unit this heavily used in a 9.4 configuration, a worn power amplifier block or a faulty protection relay can easily go unnoticed during a simple stereo test. Also check that all HDMI inputs and outputs work correctly and that HDCP2.3 recognition functions on each port, as HDMI chip faults are a known issue on multichannel amplifiers of this generation. Finally, make sure the Wi-Fi/HEOS module connects properly and that the firmware accepts updates, as some older units get stuck on an outdated version.
