Description
The Denon AVC-X3900H is a home cinema audio-video amplifier fitted with 9 amplified channels and processing that can extend up to 11 channels. It serves as the hub for a living room installation combining high-resolution video, multichannel sound and multiroom audio distribution.
Its power section delivers 9x135 watts into 6 ohms, enough to drive demanding surround and height configurations. It decodes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced and 360 Reality Audio formats, as well as DTS HD Master, DTS Neural:X, DTS Virtual:X, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Surround and Dolby Height Virtualization, to deliver enveloping sound from every direction. On the video side, its HDMI inputs and outputs support 8K/60 and 4K/120 with CEC and eARC, along with HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR and BT.2020 pass-through on all ports (HDCP 2.3), a useful point for connecting recent sources without compromising picture quality.
This model is aimed at those building a complete home cinema installation, with several HDMI sources, a surround and height speaker configuration, and a need for multiroom streaming via TuneIn or other network services. Its extensive connectivity also makes it a base for scalable systems, with the possibility of bi-amping and dedicated subwoofer outputs.

What to check before buying used
With this type of home cinema amplifier, test each HDMI input individually: a faulty HDCP handshake or a damaged port can limit 4K/120 or eARC passthrough without necessarily making the unit unusable. Also check that the MM phono input works properly and that there is no hum or crackling on the power channels, particularly those driving the height channels. Checking the subwoofer outputs and confirming that all 9 amplified channels are recognised during a full calibration helps rule out a fault on an isolated power amplifier.
