The AVC-X4800H belongs to the family of Denon audio-video amplifiers designed and assembled in Japan. It combines within a single chassis a multichannel home cinema processor and nine power amplifiers, enabling it to directly drive a 9.4 installation without recourse to external amplifiers. Its purpose is to serve as the central hub of a dedicated room or a large living room fitted with a projector or a recent television.
Each channel delivers 200 watts into 6 ohms, a comfortable reserve that allows the use of less sensitive speakers and the maintenance of high levels without the amplification being pushed to its limit continuously. Decoding covers the main immersive formats: Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Surround and Dolby Height Virtualization, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, DTS Neural:X and DTS Virtual:X, along with IMAX Enhanced and Auro-3D. This range means no remixing is needed depending on the source being played, whether a disc, a stream or an older soundtrack upmixed virtually.
On the video side, the HDMI section supports 8K/60 and 4K/120, with CEC and eARC to send the television's sound back to the amplifier via a single cable. Signal processing passes through transparently across all ports, at HDCP 2.3, preserving the most demanding colour and dynamic range chains.
This model is aimed at those building a complete multichannel installation who wish to avoid stacking multiple components: a single unit handles video source switching, decoding, correction and power. Its 13.4 kg and 236 mm height do, however, call for a sturdy cabinet and a sufficiently deep shelf, with clearance above the casing: nine amplification channels generate heat, and restricted ventilation remains the leading cause of premature wear on this type of equipment.

What to check before buying used
On this type of amplifier with nine power stages, it is best to check that every channel actually produces sound, particularly the Height channels and the centre channel, which are often the most heavily used. The HDMI ports deserve individual testing: a port damaged by a power surge or a firmware fault may lose 4K/120 pass-through or HDCP 2.3 without the picture disappearing entirely. Checking the ventilation and the absence of any overheating smell gives an indication of how the unit has been used, as power electronics are sensitive to prolonged operation in a confined space.
