Description
The AVR-X1800H is a home cinema audio-video amplifier from Denon, designed to drive a multichannel installation up to a 7.2 or 5.2.2 configuration compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It centralises both surround sound management and video stream handling, with HDMI connectivity capable of transmitting 8K.
Its 7 power amplifiers deliver 120 watts per channel at 6 ohms (80 watts at 8 ohms), enough to power a small to medium-sized room without faltering during dynamic scenes. On the video side, the HDMI inputs and outputs support 8K/60 and 4K/120, with CEC, eARC and an HDMI-to-HDMI scaler up to 8K, while HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR and BT.2020 pass-through is supported on all ports in HDCP2.3. Decoding includes Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, DTS HD Master, Auro 3D and IMAX Enhanced, backed by Audyssey MultEQ XT32 acoustic correction. Connectivity includes 6 HDMI inputs and outputs, a PHONO MM input, a front-panel USB input, two independent subwoofer outputs as well as optical and analogue digital inputs.
The FM/DAB tuner and TuneIn internet radio are built in, as is HEOS functionality for streaming music to other HEOS speakers around the home, alongside Wi-Fi, two-way Bluetooth and AirPlay 2.
This model is aimed at those wishing to build a complete home cinema installation for a standard living room, combining high-definition video playback, Atmos/DTS:X multichannel sound and multiroom audio streaming, without needing multiple peripheral devices.

What to check before buying used
On a home cinema amplifier of this generation, it is best to test each HDMI channel individually, particularly on 8K/4K120 configurations, to rule out any compatibility issues or a faulty scaler. It is also worth checking that all power amplifiers work correctly on a full multichannel installation, as well as DAB reception and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. Checking the PHONO MM input and subwoofer outputs is also useful if the unit is to be used with a turntable or a subwoofer.
