The AVR-X2800HDAB is an audio-video receiver from Denon, designed to serve as the heart of a home cinema installation. It handles both speaker amplification and management of video and audio sources, with a configuration that can go up to 7.2 channels or 5.2.2 to incorporate height channels.
Each channel has a separate high-current amplification stage, for a stated power output of 125 W into 6 ohms (95 W into 8 ohms) across all 7 power amplifier blocks. On the video side, the unit handles 8K/60 and 4K/120 on its HDMI inputs and outputs, with HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR compatibility and BT.2020 pass-through across all ports (HDCP2.3), as well as an HDMI upscaler to 8K. On the sound side, it decodes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master as well as the Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing technologies to enrich standard stereo or multichannel sources.
Connectivity includes 6 HDMI inputs/outputs of which 3 are HDMI 2.1, 2 HDMI 8K HDCP 2.3 outputs (one with eARC), 4 analogue RCA inputs, one MM phono input, 2 optical digital inputs, 2 stereo RCA pre-outs for a zone 2, 2 independent subwoofer outputs and a front-panel USB input. Networked audio streaming runs via HEOS Built-in, Wi-Fi, two-way Bluetooth and AirPlay 2, with support for TuneIn internet radio and FM/DAB tuner.
This model is aimed at anyone wishing to equip a medium-sized room with a complete home cinema system, capable of reproducing immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X without adding multiple separate units. What to check before buying used
On a receiver of this type, the volume potentiometers and source selectors are the first elements to test: listen for crackling or a channel dropout when turning the knobs. Also check that every HDMI port (particularly the 2.1 inputs and 8K outputs) transmits the picture properly without flickering or HDCP signal loss, and that the MM phono input is free of any hum. The capacitors in the power supply stage, put under load across all 7 power amplifier blocks, are also worth checking if the unit has seen heavy use.
