Description
The Denon DP-400 is a belt-drive turntable fitted with a pre-fitted MM cartridge and a built-in phono preamplifier. It allows playback of 33, 45 and 78 rpm records without the need for an external phono stage, as the pre-amplified output can be connected directly to a line input.
The S-shaped tonearm has been designed to reduce distortion during playback, and features an automatic lift system as well as automatic stop at the end of the record. The platter measures 41 cm in diameter. The supplied MM cartridge carries the serial number DSN-85, with an optimal tracking force of 2.0 g (19.6 mN) and an output level of 2.5 mV at 1 kHz. The phono preamplifier output delivers 150 mV at 1 kHz, with a frequency range covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
The turntable is supplied with a dust cover and a 45 rpm adapter, and features a speed control sensor for the three available rotation speeds.

What to check before buying used
The original MM cartridge (DSN-85) should be inspected under magnification: a worn stylus or a suspension hardened by age produces hiss, whistling or distortion in the treble. Also check the condition of the drive belt, which is prone to loosening and slipping over time, and test the automatic lift system on the S-shaped tonearm as well as the end-of-record stop, mechanisms that can sometimes seize on poorly maintained units. Checking the rotation speed across all three settings will help identify any motor drift.
