Description
The Denon PMA-1700NE is a stereo integrated amplifier that combines a power stage, an MM/MC phono preamplifier and a USB digital-to-analogue converter within a single chassis. It allows a turntable, digital sources and conventional analogue devices to be connected directly, without an external preamplification stage.
Its power stage is built around a Single Push-Pull UHC-MOS architecture paired with a dual transformer, for a stable power supply capable of delivering 140 W per channel into 4 ohms. The Texas Instruments PCM1795 DAC supports DSD signals up to 11.2 MHz and PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz, while AL32 Processing Plus restores audio information lost during digital recording for more detailed playback. The measured total harmonic distortion is 0.01% at rated output -3 dB into 8 ohms at 1 kHz, a level reflecting sound reproduction faithful to the original signal.
Connectivity includes four RCA analogue inputs, one of which is an MM/MC phono input, two optical digital inputs, one coaxial input, a USB type B port, an RCA Rec output, a pre-amp input, IR inputs and outputs, a 6.35 mm headphone jack output on the front panel, and two speaker terminal sets A/B.

What to check before buying used
The built-in MM/MC phono preamp is worth testing with a known cartridge to check for the absence of hiss or hum on both settings. The volume and balance potentiometers, as well as the input selectors, should be operated to detect any crackling caused by oxidised contacts. It is also worth checking that the USB port and the optical and coaxial digital inputs work correctly, along with the stability of the front display.
