Denon PMA-3000NE

The PMA-3000NE is a stereo integrated amplifier from Denon, designed to drive a pair of speakers directly without the need for a separate preamplifier or power amplifier. It features a phono stage compatible with MM and MC cartridges, along with a digital-to-analogue conversion module for connecting modern digital sources.

The output stage is built around a seventh-generation push-pull architecture, delivering 80 W per channel into 8 ohms and 160 W per channel into 4 ohms: this increase in output at reduced load allows the amplifier to retain control over speakers that are more demanding in terms of current. The total harmonic distortion rating of 0.01% and the signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB reflect a clean reproduction, with a very low noise floor. On the phono side, the input sensitivity of 2.5 mW at an impedance of 47 kOhms and a signal-to-noise ratio of 89 dB are suited to vinyl playback with well-controlled hiss. The digital processing relies on four ES9018K2M converters and the Ultra AL32 algorithm for waveform interpolation, supporting streams up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD 11.2 MHz via the optical, coaxial and USB-B inputs.

This model is aimed at enthusiasts who already own a turntable or wish to add one without going through an external preamplifier, while also benefiting from digital inputs for modern sources. Its ability to drive speakers at 4 ohms also makes it a sensible choice for setups where load impedance varies depending on the track or listening volume.

When buying used, it is worth checking the operation of the tone controls (bass and treble, +/- 8 dB at 100 Hz and 10 kHz), the absence of crackling on the volume and balance potentiometers, and the good condition of the protection relays at power-on. The phono stage deserves particular attention: testing with an MM cartridge and, if possible, an MC cartridge helps confirm that neither channel shows abnormal background noise. The RCA connectors, USB-B input and optical/coaxial sockets should also be checked, as well as the 6.35 mm headphone output on the front panel.

The aluminium chassis treated against vibration and the triple power supply contribute to the unit's operating stability, which is worth considering for extended use in a dedicated stereo system.
