Dynaudio Focus 50

The Focus 50 is an active floorstanding speaker from Dynaudio, designed as a 3-way system with onboard amplification. Unlike a conventional passive speaker, it integrates its own power stages and therefore does not require an external amplifier to function.

Its architecture is based on two 18 cm woofers using MSP technology, a 14 cm midrange also in MSP, and a 28 mm soft dome tweeter. Each transducer is driven by its own amplification section, with the whole totalling 4x150 W distributed across the three ways. The crossover frequencies are set at 285 Hz and 4600 Hz, the transition points between the drivers. The stated frequency response spans from 18 Hz to 24 kHz (± 3dB), reflecting broad spectral coverage, from deep bass to extended treble.

This model is intended for use in a living room or dedicated listening room, for a listener wanting a compact system with integrated amplification rather than multiple separate components. The floorstanding format and weight of 27 kg per speaker call for stable floor placement, rather than shelf mounting.

When buying used, it is worth checking that all amplified ways are functioning correctly, as each driver is paired with its own channel: a fault in an internal amplifier may affect only the bass, midrange or treble. The condition of the tweeter domes deserves particular attention, as these elements are fragile and vulnerable to impact and dust. It is also worth checking the condition of the connectors and integrated power supply, as well as checking for any play or deformation in the MSP diaphragms of the woofers and midrange, which would indicate wear or poor storage conditions.

The dimensions of the Focus 50 are 213 x 1095 x 337 mm (W x H x D), rising to 271 x 1123 x 358 mm with feet and grille fitted-elements also worth checking at resale if they are to be included with the speaker.
