Description
The S4-DVC65 is a ceiling-mounted speaker belonging to the Dynaudio Custom Studio range. Its distinctive feature lies in its dual voice coil, which allows it to reproduce a stereo signal from a single speaker, without requiring the installation of a second diffusion point.
The 165 mm midrange/woofer driver is paired with two 28 mm soft dome tweeters, each adjustable across three levels and steerable, allowing the sound to be directed towards the desired listening area. A switch located on the rear of the speaker also allows operation in dipole mode, useful for surround configurations. The voice coil is made of aluminium rather than copper, a choice that improves power handling, cooling and energy transfer of the transducer. With a power handling of 2 x 50 W, a sensitivity of 83.5 dB SPL and a frequency response from 50 Hz to 20 kHz ± 3 dB, it has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms.
This model is aimed at those who wish to provide sound in a small or transitional space, such as a hallway, cupboard or bathroom, without multiplying installation points. Its ability to deliver stereo reproduction from a single speaker also makes it a practical solution for installations where space or aesthetics limit the number of visible speakers.
The speaker is fitted using a tool-free mounting system, and a paintable metal grille allows it to be adapted to the décor. The 210 mm cut-out diameter and 167 mm mounting depth should be checked before any installation, particularly when integrating into an existing false ceiling.

What to check before buying used
Check the movement of the two steerable tweeter domes: on a unit that has long served in a hallway or bathroom, their pivots may seize up or lose their holding position. Also check the condition of the midrange/woofer surround (flexibility, absence of tears or moisture marks, as ceiling mounting increases the risk of water ingress) as well as the correct operation of the rear stereo/dipole switch, whose contacts oxidise over time.
