The Special Forty is a 2-way bookshelf speaker from Dynaudio, built as a bass-reflex design with a rear port. It belongs to the category of compact speakers intended for indoor listening, on stands or on furniture, within a quality hi-fi system.
The Esotar Forty tweeter, a 28 mm soft dome with an aluminium voice coil, was designed to maximise internal airflow, which promotes fine treble reproduction while lowering its resonant frequency. This characteristic eases the transition to the bass/midrange driver, a 17 cm woofer with an MSP diaphragm drawing on certain principles from the brand's Confidence and Evidence ranges. What to check before buying used
The MSP woofer and especially the Esotar Forty tweeter are vulnerable to impact: a dented dome or a deformed diaphragm can be seen by eye and tested by ear across the whole frequency range. Check the condition of the rear bass-reflex port (cracks, detachment) and the cabinet joinery, particularly the corners and veneer, which are often marked on this bookshelf format. A check with headphones or on a reliable amplifier will help identify any crackling linked to the crossover or a loss of control in the bass.
