Description
The ELAC 4 Pi Plus 2 is a ribbon super-tweeter designed to complement existing speakers rather than to function on its own. It is a supplementary module intended to enrich the upper end of the sound spectrum of an already installed speaker, adding an extra dimension in the treble register.
Paired with speakers that provide precision in the sound image, this super-tweeter produces a rendering described as airy, open and omnidirectional. This non-directional dispersion of treble sound aims to broaden the sense of space around the listening position, an effect that conventional speakers do not reproduce in the same way.
The 4 Pi Plus 2 stands out for its adjustment options. Sensitivity can be set to five positions: -4, -2, 0, +2 and +4 dB. The crossover frequency, meanwhile, can be selected from three values: 10, 12 or 15 kHz. These two parameters allow the super-tweeter's behaviour to be adapted to the tone and level of the speakers it is paired with, for a more coherent sonic integration.
This type of accessory is aimed at enthusiasts already equipped with a pair of speakers or drivers whose sound image they appreciate, but who wish to bring more openness and spatialisation to the top end of the spectrum. What to check before buying used
The ribbon of the super-tweeter is a fragile component: check that no impact or pressure has deformed the diaphragm and that the output remains even without any dead zones in the treble. Also check both adjustment switches (sensitivity and crossover frequency): oxidised contacts or a worn detent can cause poor contact or a silent channel on certain positions. An inspection of the connection terminals and the internal filter is recommended, as the latter can deteriorate with the age of the unit.
