Description
The FS 187 is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker designed by ELAC. It combines a folded ribbon JET III tweeter, a technology specific to the brand, with aluminium sandwich cone woofer/midrange drivers. This type of floorstanding speaker is intended for stereo or home cinema listening as a main speaker.
The JET III tweeter is based on a folded ribbon principle, known for delivering treble with precision and good frequency extension, here up to 50 kHz according to the stated frequency response, which spans from 36 Hz to 50 kHz. The crossover frequencies are set at 700 Hz and 2,700 Hz, defining the division of work between the speaker's three ways. The aluminium sandwich cones of the woofer/midrange drivers aim for good rigidity, useful for limiting cone distortion at high sound levels.
With a sensitivity of 89 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms (minimum 3.4 ohms), the FS 187 requires an amplifier capable of delivering sufficient current into a relatively low load. What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the suspensions on the aluminium sandwich cone woofer/midrange drivers: sagging or excessive stiffening affects bass performance. Inspect the JET III ribbon tweeter, which is fragile to shocks and humidity, by listening to the treble for any crackling or loss of clarity. Also examine the cabinet of the speakers (veneer, corners, bass-reflex ports) as well as the tightness of the connection terminals at the rear.
