The Navis ARB-51 from ELAC is an active bookshelf speaker, meaning it houses its amplification stage directly, without relying on a separate amplifier. Each transducer has its own dedicated analogue amplifier, an architecture that is uncommon for this type of product since most amplified speakers on the market rely on digital Class D stages.
ELAC developed the Navis's central transducer in-house: a 10 cm aluminium midrange driver paired with a 2.5 cm soft dome tweeter mounted concentrically, that is, at the very centre of the midrange driver. This arrangement brings the emission points of the two drivers closer together, which promotes a coherent and homogeneous soundstage regardless of the listening axis. An aluminium woofer completes the set for low-frequency reproduction. The stated total amplification is 300 watts, distributed across the three transducers.
The connectivity offers balanced inputs, in either RCA or XLR, allowing the Navis to be connected to a conventional hi-fi source or to studio equipment with professional outputs. It is also possible to add the Discovery Connect wireless module to do away with cables between the source and the speaker.
This model is aimed at those seeking a compact and simplified listening solution, without a separate system, while retaining dedicated analogue amplification per transducer. What to check before buying used
On an active speaker, the integrated amplification stage is the key point to check: ask for a listening test on all three drivers to rule out any crackling, humming or dropout from the concentric midrange-tweeter. Also check the condition of the woofer's suspensions, which can stiffen or crack over time, and make sure there is no play or signs of oxidation on the RCA/XLR balanced inputs. Finally, an inspection of the cabinet and protective grilles will reveal any impacts or deformation of the enclosure.
