Description
The ECI-6 DX MKII is a stereo integrated amplifier from Electrocompaniet, combining an analogue power stage with a built-in digital-to-analogue converter. It allows digital and analogue sources to be connected directly without going through a separate preamplifier.
Its power section delivers 2 x 125 W into 8 ohms, 2 x 200 W into 4 ohms and up to 2 x 370 W into 2 ohms, with a maximum peak current exceeding 100 A. This behaviour under low-impedance loads reflects an ability to drive current-hungry speakers without apparent compression. The damping factor above 350 into 8 ohms indicates good control of the driver cones, particularly in the bass. The output impedance below 0.02 ohm and channel separation above 120 dB contribute to precise stereo reproduction, while total harmonic distortion remains below 0.004% across the 20 Hz to 20 kHz band.
The built-in digital-to-analogue converter processes signals up to 24 bit / 192 kHz. The unit features a digital USB input, two SPDIF Toslink inputs and two coaxial inputs, allowing a computer, network player or external digital source to be connected directly to the amplifier. On the analogue side, one balanced XLR input and three unbalanced RCA inputs are available, complemented by a balanced XLR preamp output and an unbalanced RCA preamp output, useful for adding an active subwoofer or an additional power amplifier.

What to check before buying used
On the built-in DAC, check that the USB source is recognised reliably and that there are no dropouts or interference on the SPDIF Toslink and coaxial inputs. The large transformers and capacitors in the power stage can produce a slight audible hum with no signal present: listening at idle, with speakers connected, will reveal this. Also test each input switch and the volume potentiometer to rule out any crackling or level jumps.
