Description
The EMC-1 MKV is a high-end CD player from Electrocompaniet, fitted with an updated transport mechanism and a redesigned chassis to align with the manufacturer's new MKII range. It can operate in two ways: as a complete player thanks to its internal digital-to-analogue converter, or as a simple CD transport for those who already own an external DAC, via its two digital outputs.
At the heart of the unit is a fully balanced D/A converter paired with discrete analogue audio circuits. The mechanical construction spreads the functions across five separate enclosures, dedicated respectively to the analogue circuits, digital circuits, transport, transformer and controller: this separation aims to limit interference between stages and improve signal stability. The player features a noise level below -130 dB, a frequency deviation of 0.05 dB across the 20-20 kHz band, channel separation greater than 110 dB, a total harmonic distortion (THD+N) below 0.003%, and a dynamic range of 120 dB.
Digital-to-analogue conversion relies on a Cirrus Logic CS4398 chip, capable of handling files up to 192 kHz/24-bit, as well as numerous compressed and uncompressed formats: WAV, MP3, AAC+, Vorbis, ALAC, FLAC, APE, AIFF, WMA, up to 192 kHz/24-bit, and DSD up to DSD 128 (5.6 MHz).

What to check before buying used
The optical block and loading tray deserve priority checking: a worn laser results in difficulty reading certain discs or longer access times, while a tray that forces, clicks or struggles to open indicates worn mechanics. The five separate enclosures also involve several internal connecting cables whose connectors must be properly seated. A playback test on several CDs, including scratched ones or towards the end of a disc, allows the transport's actual reliability to be assessed.
