Description
The Architect IC8 is a ceiling-mounted speaker designed by Elipson to blend discreetly into a room while serving as a surround channel within a home cinema setup. Its white magnetic grille, supplied with the speaker, can be painted to match any ceiling.
This is a 2-way speaker with a coaxial configuration, combining a 210 mm midrange-woofer with a paper cone and rubber surround with a 25 mm silk dome tweeter placed at the centre of the same axis. This tweeter is pivoting, allowing the sound to be precisely directed towards the listening area even when the speaker is not installed directly above the listeners. The crossover frequency is set at 2550 Hz, dividing the work between the two drivers. With a sensitivity of 87 dB/1 W/1 m and an impedance of 8 ohms, it accepts a maximum power of 125 W, for a stated frequency response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz.
This model is aimed at those installing a multichannel home cinema system and looking for surround speakers that become invisible once fitted, or who want to spread ambient sound throughout a room without visual clutter. The ceiling-mounted format is particularly suited to living rooms, dedicated cinema rooms or spaces where the aesthetic needs to remain neutral.

What to check before buying used
The paper cone of the midrange-woofer is prone to damage from moisture if the speaker was installed in a poorly ventilated room: a ring mark or warping indicates a weakened cone. Also check that the central tweeter still pivots freely on its axis and is not stuck in position, as well as the condition of the magnetic grille, which is sometimes warped or unevenly repainted. Finally, inspect the mounting clips at the rear, which are put under strain when the unit is removed, and the rubber surround of the driver, which should remain supple and free of cracks.
