Description
The Planet L Performance is a bookshelf speaker from Elipson, a historic French hi-fi brand. It is built around a single coaxial driver combining a 16.5 cm midrange/woofer and a central tweeter, a configuration designed to offer a coherent sound image regardless of listening angle. It fits equally well into a dedicated stereo system or a home cinema setup.
The midrange/woofer driver uses a cellulose pulp cone with a damping treatment, paired with a peripheral surround using DAR (Double Asymmetric Rubber) technology. This surround improves cone control at high volume, resulting in higher power handling and the ability to listen at sustained volume without excessive distortion. At the centre of the assembly, a 25 mm treated silk dome tweeter, fitted with a Neodymium magnet and a horn-loaded waveguide, takes over from 2900 Hz to reproduce the treble with linearity and detail.
The internal crossover, at 18 dB per octave, uses quality components: series capacitors in MKP polypropylene film, parallel capacitors in MKT polyester film, a low internal resistance series inductor and a precision metal oxide film resistor. The internal wiring, in 2.25 mm² OFC copper, completes this design geared towards signal fidelity.
With a sensitivity of 90 dB/1W/1m, an impedance of 8 ohms and a stated frequency response of 46 Hz to 20 kHz, this speaker accepts a recommended power of 30 to 120 watts for an RMS power of 100 W. It is aimed at enthusiasts looking for a compact, precise speaker, suitable for a living room as much as a dedicated listening room, with the option of floor stand or wall mounting.

What to check before buying used
On the coaxial driver, check the condition of the DAR surround and ensure there is no tearing or sagging of the cellulose pulp cone, as well as the condition of the central tweeter's silk dome, which is prone to dents. Listen to both drivers separately to detect any crackling or loss of treble linearity, a possible sign of an ageing MKP or MKT capacitor in the crossover. Finally, examine the cabinet (corners, veneer, driver fixings) and check for any play or parasitic vibration from the cone at sustained volume.
