The EH-LS800B is an ultra short throw laser projector from Epson, designed to replace a conventional television and project a large image without ceiling installation. Positioned just a few centimetres from the wall, it can display films, video games and sports broadcasts on a surface ranging from 80 to 150 inches, depending on the chosen projection distance.
Its laser light source offers a rated lifespan of 20,000 hours and delivers a brightness of 4000 lumens in normal mode, reduced to 2000 lumens in economy mode, for both colour brightness and white light output. The 4K PRO UHD resolution, combined with a contrast ratio of 2,500,000:1 and colour reproduction of up to 1.07 billion shades, aims for a detailed image with deep blacks and gradual tonal transitions. The very short projection ratio, from 0.16 to 0.40:1, with a focal length of 2.3 mm, explains the unit's ability to generate a large image from a distance of 28 to 53 cm from the wall.
3LCD technology, unique to Epson, splits light across three separate panels to reproduce colours without relying on a colour wheel, resulting in a consistent image regardless of the content displayed. Several colour modes are available, Dynamic, Natural, Cinema and Vivid, to adjust the rendering according to the room's lighting conditions or the type of programme being watched.

What to check before buying used
The lifespan of the laser source can be checked via the usage hour counter accessible in the unit's menu, a more reliable indicator than the age of the unit. On this ultra short throw configuration, the 3LCD panel and lens deserve a visual inspection under a white image to detect any spots, embedded dust or early signs of colour demixing. It is also advisable to test the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and all HDMI and USB ports, as well as the ventilation, since a build-up of dirt accelerates wear on the optics.
