Description
The EX-712.2 is an all-in-one integrated hi-fi system, designed to bring together amplification, disc playback and radio reception in a single unit. It is based on the technical foundation of the EX-222.2, a model that received a "Choc" award from Classica magazine.
The amplifier delivers a power output of 2x40W RMS into 8 Ohms, rising to 2x60W into 4 Ohms thanks to a power supply built around a 220VA toroidal transformer. This power reserve allows the unit to drive speakers of varying sensitivity without showing any weakness in dynamics.
The unit includes a CD deck compatible with MP3 and WMA, as well as an FM and AM tuner offering 40 memorisable stations. A USB port allows direct playback of MP3 and WMA files stored on a USB stick, while an Apt-X Bluetooth receiver enables wireless streaming from a smartphone or tablet.
In terms of connectivity, the EX-712.2 offers an auxiliary analogue RCA input and an optical and coaxial digital input, allowing it to be connected to a recent television. A subwoofer output, paired with a Large/Small selector activating a high-pass filter, allows the setup to be completed with an active subwoofer for 2.1 listening.

What to check before buying used
On this type of all-in-one amp-tuner, test the CD unit first: a drawer that struggles to open or playback skipping point to a worn optical sensor, which is costly to replace. Also check the travel of the volume and balance potentiometers, prone to crackling with age, as well as whether FM/AM station presets are retained after a power cut. The Apt-X Bluetooth pairing deserves a real-world test with a smartphone, as some receivers of this generation lose pairing stability over time.
