Description

The Pulse Protector is an electrical protection accessory designed for audio installations. It differs from traditional mains filters: it does not act in series on the circuit and therefore does not alter the signal powering the connected equipment. Its function is to absorb surges and interference whose amplitude exceeds the nominal mains voltage, dissipating this energy as heat.

The maximum voltage supported is 250 V, with a voltage peak absorption capacity of up to 2,500 V and current peaks of up to 4,500 A. The stated maximum peak energy is 3 × 65 J, reflecting an ability to withstand several successive surge events. The response time, under 25 ns, allows near-instantaneous action against an interference impulse before it reaches the sensitive components of the installation.

This type of protector is aimed at owners of hi-fi or home cinema systems wishing to safeguard their equipment without inserting a filter that could alter the sound quality. It is particularly suited to amplifiers, players and other sources sensitive to fluctuations in the electrical network, especially in regions or homes prone to micro power cuts or mains interference.

Compact, with a diameter of 39.5 mm for a length of 65 mm excluding pins and a weight of 110 g, the Pulse Protector fits easily near an existing mains socket or power supply unit.

What to check before buying used

Check that the protection diodes have not already been subjected to a significant surge: a component that has absorbed energy close to its limit may see its clamping performance reduced without any visible outward sign. Inspect the housing for signs of heat damage, cracks or deformation around the pins, which would indicate a high-intensity event already withstood. The active protection indicator light, if fitted, should be tested to confirm that the internal circuit still responds correctly.
