The Hydra-Alpha Model-2 is a mains filter from Shunyata Research, designed to protect and improve the electrical power supply of audio and video systems. It draws on the filtering technologies developed for the Triton and Talos models in the Hydra range, adapted here to a more compact format and more versatile use.
At the heart of the device is MPDA (Multi-Phase Differential Array Filter) technology, a multi-phase filtering system designed to limit electrical disturbances while retaining the circuit's ability to deliver high current. Shunyata Research states that it used its DTCD measurement method during development, with the aim of optimising the filter's performance in the face of high current demands, typical of power amplifiers or video equipment.
The compact format of the Hydra-Alpha Model-2 allows for flexible installation, whether close to a simple two-channel system or within a more complex home cinema configuration. It can be deployed as the primary filter or as a secondary filter on a dedicated line, to isolate sensitive equipment such as projectors, flat-panel displays, analogue or digital sources, amplifiers or subwoofers.
This mains filter is aimed at users with audio or home cinema installations where the quality of the power supply affects perceived performance: systems with high current draw amplifiers, multi-line dedicated configurations, or installations combining sensitive source electronics with video equipment. It suits modest systems as well as more ambitious installations.
What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the mains connectors and filtered IEC sockets, which are prone to signs of overheating or mechanical play after years of repeated connections. The original power cable and its shielding should also be inspected, along with checking for any noise, hum or suspicious smell when powering on, which could indicate a worn internal MPDA filtering component. The cabinet or chassis must show no deformation or signs of impact that could affect earthing.
