Description
The 100 ICW5 is an in-ceiling/in-wall speaker from Focal, designed for residential use. It fits equally well into a wall or ceiling, and suits a range of applications: sound distribution in a hallway or living room, stereo listening in a bedroom or kitchen, or integration into a Home Cinema installation.
This speaker adopts a coaxial configuration combining a pivoting inverted dome aluminium tweeter, more compact and less directive than previous versions, with a 13 cm Polyglass diaphragm driver. A new crossover has been designed to improve off-axis listening and limit what Focal calls the "shower effect", meaning the sensation of sound falling vertically rather than spreading naturally throughout the room.
The unibody chassis and magnetic grilles, available in circular or square shapes with no visible frame, allow for discreet installation, virtually invisible once fitted. Compatibility with humid environments, such as a bathroom, broadens its scope of use compared with a conventional in-wall speaker.
This model is aimed at those who want discreet, distributed sound throughout their home, without speakers visible on the floor or on furniture. It is equally suited to a multiroom installation or a Home Cinema system requiring surround channels integrated into the ceiling or walls.
What to check before buying used
The pivoting inverted dome tweeter and magnetic grille must be handled with care: an impact can misalign the dome's orientation or deform the grille, causing it to lose its magnetic hold. On a model intended for humid rooms, check for any signs of oxidation on the connectors and any deformation of the Polyglass diaphragm linked to prolonged exposure to moisture. Finally, check the condition of the unibody chassis at the fixing points, which are stressed during in-wall installation.
