The 1000 IWSUB Utopia is an in-wall subwoofer from Focal, belonging to the Utopia range. It has been designed to be paired with 1000 IWLCR Utopia speakers in order to complement their bass register in a Home Cinema installation or demanding stereo listening.
On a single amplification channel, it is possible to combine a 1000 IWLCR Utopia speaker with several 1000 IWSUB Utopia units, allowing the bass output to be adapted to the size of the room and the desired listening level. Its sensitivity of 83 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and its frequency response of 40 Hz to 2.5 kHz (+/-3 dB) position it as a bass complement, with a low-end cutoff at 32 Hz (-6 dB). The nominal impedance is 10 Ω, with a possible selection at 8 Ω, for a minimum impedance of 8.6 Ω.
The recommended amplification power varies depending on the impedance selected: from 100 to 750 W at 8 Ω, or from 200 to 1500 W at 4 Ω, leaving considerable scope for adjustment depending on the associated electronics.
This in-wall subwoofer is intended for Home Cinema or high-end hi-fi installations seeking discreet integration, as a complement to a 1000 IWLCR Utopia system already in place or under consideration. Its mounting depth of 99 mm and external dimensions of 593 x 305 x 101 mm require wall or ceiling installation to be planned in advance, with suitable space behind the surface.

What to check before buying used
The woofer's suspensions deserve careful visual inspection: hardened, cracked or sagging foam impairs the seal of the in-wall installation and performance at the lowest frequencies. Also check the condition of the basket and the diaphragm, as well as the absence of any voice coil rubbing during a low-level test. The protective grille and mounting clips, often handled during installation, must remain intact to ensure a clean and durable in-wall fitting.
