Description
The 300 ICW 6 belongs to the family of speakers designed to disappear into the architecture: it is set into a wall or ceiling, leaving only a flush grille visible. Focal intends it both for a discreet stereo pair and for a complete multichannel system, where it can serve as the main, centre or surround channel depending on the layout chosen.
Its architecture is a two-way coaxial design: the tweeter is placed at the centre of the woofer/midrange driver, so that both frequency ranges originate from the same point in space. This arrangement is directly relevant in an in-wall installation, where the listener moves around and almost never occupies the ideal listening axis. The 16½ cm woofer/midrange driver features a Flax cone, an eco-textile built around flax fibre, whose stiffness combined with low mass limits cone deformation during movement, resulting in a controlled midrange that primarily benefits sung vocals and film dialogue. The tweeter, meanwhile, uses an inverted aluminium/magnesium alloy dome and offers two adjustment positions allowing the treble to be tuned to the room's acoustics, a useful feature when the ceiling or walls are highly reflective.
Installation relies on the EQI (Easy Quick Install) system. The supplied mounting frame accepts walls and ceilings from 5 to 30 mm thick, is fitted without screws or tools thanks to mounting clips, then receives the speaker, which is locked in place with a quarter turn. The finish is then completed with the magnetic grille, supplied in either square or round versions, white and paintable to blend in with the surrounding surface; its anti-vibration pads prevent it from interfering with the sound.
This model suits installations where the speaker must not be visible: a living room where floorstanding speakers are unwanted, a kitchen or hallway with sound distribution, or a home cinema whose side and rear channels run through the ceiling. However, it does require planning cable runs in advance and having sufficient space behind the wall, a constraint common to all in-wall speakers.

What to check before buying used
The flax fibre Flax cone must be free of tears or dents, particularly at the edges where the surround can dry out or come away over time. Check that both tweeter adjustment positions work correctly and that there is no play or unwanted noise from the inverted dome. The EQI mounting system (retractable clips) must still grip firmly against the wall; bent or seized clips make a clean reinstallation more difficult. Finally, check that the magnetic grille has not lost its magnetism and that its anti-vibration pads are still present.
