The 300 ICW 8 is an integration speaker from Focal, designed to be recessed into a wall or ceiling for discreet sound reproduction in both stereo and home cinema setups. It is the largest model in the manufacturer's 300 Series range.
This is a 2-way coaxial speaker combining a 21 cm woofer/midrange driver with a Flax fibre cone and an inverted dome tweeter in aluminium-magnesium. This Flax cone, rigid and lightweight, draws on technology similar to that used on the W cones of the Utopia, Sopra and Electra ranges, allowing it to deliver a neutral and precise sound. The tweeter is swivelling and adjustable, a feature that allows the treble reproduction to be adjusted according to the room's acoustics. The speaker's efficiency allows it to generate a sound level of 90 dB.
This model is aimed at those who wish to integrate quality sound reproduction without visual impact in a room, whether for a stereo installation or a multichannel home cinema system. Its resistance to humidity also makes it suitable for installation in a bathroom or kitchen.
Installation relies on the EQI (Easy Quick Install) system, which requires neither screws nor tools: a mounting frame, compatible with walls or ceilings 5 to 30 mm thick, is fixed in place using retaining clips, and the speaker is then inserted and locked with a quarter turn. A magnetic protective grille, square or round, is then positioned over the speaker; it is fitted with anti-vibration pads and supplied in a white finish, paintable to match the surrounding surface.
What to check before buying used
On this in-wall model, the driver's chassis is never visible once installed, so it is worth checking before mounting for any deformation or cracking of the basket and the Flax cone, as well as the flexibility of the woofer/midrange suspension. The swivelling tweeter should rotate freely on its axis without play or stiff spots, and its aluminium-magnesium dome should show no signs of impact. Also check the condition of the EQI mounting system and the finishing grilles, which are often marked when removed.
