Description
The Alpha 50 EVO is an active monitoring speaker from Focal, designed for studio or home studio use requiring reference listening. It incorporates two separate amplifiers, one dedicated to midrange and low frequencies (35 W), the other to high frequencies (25 W), ensuring independent control of each frequency band.
The 25 mm inverted dome aluminium tweeter is paired with a 13 cm woofer with Slatefiber cone, a technology developed and manufactured in Focal's workshops in France. The frequency response extends from 45 Hz to 22 kHz (+/- 3 dB), and the maximum SPL level reaches 101 dB peak at 1 metre, allowing for high listening levels without perceptible distortion. The cabinet features a bass-reflex design with rounded edges, promoting careful acoustic integration.
In terms of connectivity, the speaker offers three types of analogue inputs: a balanced TRS 6.35 mm jack input (10 kOhms), a balanced XLR input (10 kOhms), and an unbalanced RCA input (10 kOhms) with compensated sensitivity. This variety makes it easy to integrate into different setups, whether an audio interface, a mixing console or a consumer source. Two tone adjustments are also available: the mid/low level (0-250 Hz) is adjustable by +/-6 dB, and the treble level (4.5-35 kHz) by +/-3 dB, allowing the sound to be adapted to the room's acoustics.

What to check before buying used
The 13 cm Slatefiber woofer and inverted dome tweeter should be checked visually: the driver's suspension should be supple and free of cracks, and the tweeter dome should show no dents or signs of impact. It is worth checking that both internal amplifiers work normally across the full frequency range, without crackling or dropouts on either the mid-low or treble side, and that the level control potentiometers do not cause crackling when adjusted. The condition of the TRS, XLR and RCA inputs is also worth testing with each type of cable, as these connectors are prone to oxidation over time.
