Description
The Alpha 65 Evo is an active monitoring speaker from Focal, designed for studio environments where listening precision is paramount. It combines a 16.5 cm woofer with Slatefiber cone and a 25 mm inverted aluminium dome tweeter, two transducers developed by Focal.
Amplification is split across two Class D stages: 30 W for high frequencies and 55 W for midrange and low frequencies. This separation allows each driver to receive dedicated power suited to its operating range. Frequency response extends from 40 Hz to 22 kHz (± 3 dB), and maximum sound pressure level reaches 104 dB peak at 1 metre, allowing sustained volume listening without excessive distortion.
Connectivity covers three types of inputs: balanced TRS jack, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA, all at 10 kΩ impedance, with the RCA input benefiting from compensated sensitivity to balance levels between different sources. The speaker also offers a switchable automatic standby function as well as bass and treble equalisation settings, useful for adjusting reproduction according to room acoustics.
Integrated inserts allow wall or ceiling mounting, an advantage for setups where floor space is limited or for fixed installations in control rooms.
This model is aimed at professionals and demanding enthusiasts working in home studios or recording studios, for mixing, mastering or sound recording, in spaces where compactness and sonic neutrality are sought.

What to check before buying used
Check for absence of noise or distortion on the Slatefiber woofer, whose suspension can stiffen or show marks after several years. Listen carefully to the inverted aluminium dome at high volume to detect any harshness in the treble, a sign of a fatigued diaphragm. Test each input (jack, XLR, RCA) as well as the bass and treble equalisation controls, whose potentiometers can become crackly with use. Finally, check that the automatic standby function works properly, as it can be temperamental on older units.
