Description
The Chora 816 is a floorstanding speaker from Focal's Chora range, built to a 2.5-way bass-reflex architecture. Two 165 mm drivers with Slatefiber cones handle the bass and lower midrange, while a 25 mm TNF aluminium-magnesium inverted dome tweeter covers the top of the spectrum. Floor-standing, it aims to deliver full stereo reproduction without the need for a subwoofer.
The crossover, set at 270 Hz and then 2,700 Hz, explains the 2.5-way operation: only one of the two 165 mm drivers continues into the lower midrange, while the other is confined to the bass, which widens the emissive surface in the lower register. The stated bandwidth spans 50 Hz to 28 kHz (±3 dB). With 89.5 dB sensitivity and a nominal impedance of 8 Ω dropping to 4 Ω, the floorstander accepts a power range of 40 to 200 W: it does not require oversized electronics, but an amplifier capable of driving a 4 Ω load remains preferable.

What to check before buying used
On this type of floorstander, inspection starts with the tweeter: the inverted aluminium-magnesium dome deforms at the slightest touch of a finger, and even a light indentation is irreversible and audible. Next, run a hand over the edges of both 165 mm Slatefiber cones to check the surrounds are intact and that there is no delamination, then listen at moderate volume for any hiss or whistling at the bass-reflex port, a sign of a loose seal or tube. Finally, check the tightness of the terminals, the magnetic grilles and the corners of the cabinet, which are often marked from being moved.
