Description
The Clear Mg is an open-back circum-aural headphone designed by Focal and made in France. It is intended for home hi-fi listening in a quiet environment, and stands out with its 40 mm magnesium dome transducers, a material reserved for the brand's high-end headphones.
The magnesium diaphragm allows precise sound reproduction across a wide frequency range, from 5 Hz to 28 kHz. The 55 ohm impedance and 104 dB/1 mW sensitivity make the headphones compatible with moderately powered headphone amplifiers, without requiring oversized electronics. The harmonic distortion rate, below 0.25% at 1 kHz for 100 dB, reflects good linearity control even at high sound levels.
Comfort is provided by a padded headband covered in leather and microfibre, as well as perforated microfibre earpads filled with 20 mm memory foam. Two cables are supplied: a 3-metre balanced XLR Y-cable and a 1.2-metre unbalanced 3.5 mm mini-jack Y-cable, along with a mini-jack to 6.35 mm adapter. A carrying case is included with the headphones.

What to check before buying used
The perforated microfibre earpads and the headband's memory foam compress or crack over time: check their flexibility and the absence of tears, bearing in mind these are replaceable wear parts. Also check that both Y-cables (XLR and mini-jack) and the 6.35 mm adapter are original, and that the connectors show no play or oxidation. The very thin magnesium dome of the transducers is vulnerable to impact and direct pressure: any dent in the diaphragm or unusual distortion at low volume should be treated as a warning sign.
