Description
The Dôme Flax is a compact 2-way sealed-box speaker from Focal, designed to blend discreetly into a living room or lounge. With a diameter of just 14 cm, it is suited to near-field listening as well as background sound reinforcement for a room, whether stand-mounted, wall- or ceiling-mounted, or simply placed on a piece of furniture.
It follows a 2-way structure with a 10 cm woofer/midrange driver and an aluminium-magnesium dome tweeter, separated by a crossover with a cutoff frequency set at 2.5 kHz. The woofer/midrange cone uses Flax technology, a natural flax-based sandwich composite already used on other Focal ranges, aimed at delivering greater definition and a more linear frequency response compared with a conventional Polyglass cone. The stated frequency response spans from 80 Hz to 28 kHz, with a sensitivity of 88 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (4 ohms minimum). Power handling is 100 W, provided a high-pass filter set to at least 80 Hz is used.
This compact, lightweight format, weighing 1.9 kg per speaker, suits installations where space must remain limited: bookshelf, low cabinet, wall bracket or ceiling mount. It can serve as a satellite channel in a multichannel home cinema system as well as the main speaker in a scaled-down stereo setup, for living rooms of 40 m² or more depending on the configuration chosen.

What to check before buying used
The natural flax Flax cone does not tolerate impact or prolonged damp well: check for any deformation, cracking or detachment at the surround of the woofer/midrange driver. Also inspect the aluminium-magnesium tweeter dome, which is highly susceptible to punctures from any contact with a sharp object. Finally, check the cabinet and the connection terminals at the rear, as the screw fittings can loosen over time.
