Description
The Focal iCub is an active subwoofer that forms the amplified heart of a 2.1 system. Combined with a computer or a digital music player, it turns a simple stereo setup into an amplified 2.1 installation, handling both bass reproduction and the amplification of the two left and right satellites.
The subwoofer features a 20 cm down-firing woofer, driven by a 150 W BASH amplifier. Two additional BASH amplifiers, each rated at 75 W, are built in to power the satellites, giving a total available power of 400 W across the system. A 20-bit digital-to-analogue converter is also built in, and the crossover frequency between the subwoofer and satellites can be set to 85 or 100 Hz depending on the satellite model used.
Its compact cube shape naturally suits desktop setups or small living rooms, where the size of a traditional subwoofer would be difficult to accommodate. It is aimed at nomadic or amplified computer listening, where extra bass is needed without adding multiple separate electronic components.

What to check before buying used
The down-firing woofer requires an inspection of the foam surround, which is often hardened or cracked after several years, as well as a check of the cube's seal when handling it. The built-in BASH amplifiers should be tested over an extended period: a subwoofer that heats up abnormally or cuts out after a few minutes indicates ageing power supply components. Also check that the crossover frequency selector (85/100 Hz) works properly, as it can sometimes be stiff or unstable on older units.
