Description
The Focal Shape 65 is an active monitoring speaker, designed for near-field listening in a professional context. It combines a 6.5-inch woofer with a Flax cone, an aluminium-magnesium "M"-profile tweeter and class AB bi-amplification, with an MDF sealed cabinet and a dual 16.5 cm passive radiator.
Its frequency response extends from 40 Hz to 35 kHz, for a maximum level of 109 dB. It offers several settings allowing the sound to be adapted to the room's acoustics: a bass equalisation of ±6 dB between 0 and 250 Hz, a low-mid equalisation of ±3 dB at 160 Hz, a treble equalisation of ±3 dB between 4.5 kHz and 35 kHz, as well as a switchable high-pass filter adjustable to 45, 60 or 90 Hz. These settings allow the speaker to be adjusted according to its positioning, including near a wall.
The connectivity includes an unbalanced RCA input and a balanced XLR input, suited to studio setups as well as classic audio processing chains. The feet are height-adjustable, and mounting inserts make it easier to integrate into different listening configurations.

What to check before buying used
On this type of active speaker, test each class AB amplification channel separately to rule out any hum or intermittent cut-out, and operate the equalisation controls (bass, low-mid, treble) as well as the high-pass filter selector to check they respond without crackling. Inspect the woofer's Flax cone and the two passive radiators for tears, dents or detachment, and check that the aluminium-magnesium tweeter shows no play or distortion at high volume. An inspection of the MDF cabinet is also required to check for misaligned panels or signs of moisture.
