Focal SIB EVO

Focal's Sib range has been a mainstay of home cinema since 2002, and the Sib Evo represents the generation designed with object-based sound in mind. The set comes in a 5.1.2 configuration: Sib Evo satellites for the surround channels, two Sib Evo Atmos satellites fitted with an additional upward-firing driver, and the Cub Evo subwoofer for the lower end of the spectrum.

The Atmos satellites work on the principle of reflection: the upper transducer sends its signal towards the ceiling, which then reflects it back down into the listening area. This overhead effect is therefore achieved without drilling into or recessing a speaker in the ceiling, the driver being built into the cabinet rather than added as a separate module. The satellites operate as a two-way design with a crossover frequency set at 3.5 kHz.

On the measurements front, the satellites are rated for a frequency response of 65 Hz to 25 kHz at plus or minus 3 dB, with a -6 dB roll-off measured at 60 Hz. The Cub Evo takes over below that, covering a range of 35 Hz to 150 Hz with a -6 dB roll-off of 30 Hz: the overlap between the two guarantees a seamless transition through the lower midrange. A sensitivity of 90 dB at 2.83 V/1 m and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms make the set easy to drive, with a recommended amplification range of 25 to 200 W.

This type of set is aimed at the living room rather than a dedicated listening room. The compact size of the satellites and the use of ceiling reflection suit rooms where large speaker cabinets and overhead cabling work are unwelcome. A wall bracket is available as an option for mounting the satellites, though for the Atmos channels this assumes a ceiling that is flat and reflective enough for the vertical effect to work properly.

When buying second-hand, a few checks are specific to this kind of set. The Polyflex diaphragms of the mid-woofers and the fabric dome of the tweeters should be inspected visually: look for any dents, tears or signs of overload. The push-button connectors on the back of the satellites wear with repeated handling and should grip the wire firmly. The articulated base of the satellites is worth testing joint by joint for movement. On the Cub Evo, the active module is the sensitive point: listen for any hiss or hum on power-up, check that the level control and automatic standby function work correctly, and make sure the matt black finish of the MDF cabinet hasn't swollen due to damp. Finally, check that both Atmos satellites are present and properly paired, without which the 5.1.2 configuration loses its purpose.
