Description
The Sopra N°3 is a high-fidelity floorstanding speaker from Focal, positioned in the brand's high-end range, below the Utopia III line. It combines a beryllium tweeter with two 21 cm woofers, in a compact cabinet whose internal architecture has been specifically designed to prioritise the volume allocated to the woofers.
The beryllium tweeter is loaded by an infinite-load horn, called IHL (Infinite Horn Loading), which progressively absorbs the tweeter's rear wave in order to limit distortion despite a constrained cabinet volume. The midrange driver benefits from two technologies: the NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit) magnetic circuit, which stabilises the driver's magnetic field to reduce distortion, and the TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension, inspired by anti-seismic systems and motor racing, which controls diaphragm resonance. The frequency response extends from 33 Hz to 40 kHz (26 Hz at -6 dB), with a sensitivity of 91.5 dB at 1 kHz. The nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with a minimum of 3.1 ohms, for a power handling of 300 W.

What to check before buying used
On this speaker, the TMD suspension of the midrange driver and the surrounds of the two woofers should be examined: a sagging or hardened surround affects the rendering of the lower spectrum. Also check for the absence of play or unwanted noise at the IHL horn of the beryllium tweeter, a dome that is particularly sensitive to impact. The cabinetwork, in particular the lacquered or veneered side panels and the magnetic grilles, warrants a visual check from several angles to spot scratches, chips or veneer lifting.
