Description
Sopra N°3 is a high-end floorstanding speaker from Focal, designed to deliver generous bass within a relatively compact volume. It stands out for its beryllium tweeter and two 21 cm woofers, compared with 18 cm on the Sopra N°2 model, giving it more powerful bass within the same range.
The beryllium tweeter is loaded by an infinite-load horn, known as IHL (Infinite Horn Loading), which progressively absorbs the rear wave of the driver in order to limit distortion and preserve sound definition. The midrange, meanwhile, benefits from two in-house technologies: the NIC circuit (Neutral Inductance Circuit), which stabilises the driver's magnetic field to reduce distortion, and the TMD suspension (Tuned Mass Damper), inspired by anti-seismic systems, which controls diaphragm resonance.
In terms of measurements, Sopra N°3 offers a frequency response of 33 Hz to 40 kHz (26 Hz at -6 dB), a sensitivity of 91.5 dB at 1 kHz and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (3.1 ohms minimum). It accepts a power handling of 300 W.
This speaker is aimed at discerning music enthusiasts seeking dynamic, controlled bass paired with great finesse in the treble, within a high-end stereo system where aesthetics matter as much as performance. Its internal architecture, entirely redesigned to give the woofers more room, makes it suited to living rooms or listening rooms large enough to make the most of its bass register.
Sopra N°3 is available in lacquered finishes or oak wood finishes (Light Oak and Black Oak) with High Gloss varnish, designed by the Pineau & Le Porcher agency.

What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the two 21 cm woofers deserve close inspection: look for any sagging, cracking or loss of flexibility that would indicate ageing of the surround. Also check the condition of the cabinet and veneer, particularly on the edges and base, as well as the absence of any play or damage on the beryllium tweeter's IHL horn, a fragile component that is costly to replace.
