Theva N°3-D is a floorstanding speaker designed by Focal for Home Cinema systems using Dolby Atmos technology. It features an additional driver, positioned on top of the cabinet, whose directional baffle projects sound waves towards the ceiling to recreate the vertical channel specific to this technology. Height sound effects, aircraft passing overhead, rain, thunderstorms, thereby gain in realism and depth.
The main driver uses the Slatefiber diaphragm, an exclusive Focal technology manufactured in France: recycled carbon fibres, non-woven and aligned in a single direction, are sandwiched between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. This structure aims to combine rigidity, damping and lightness, three qualities sought after for a dynamic and balanced sound. The TNF tweeter, made of aluminium/magnesium with an inverted dome, uses a shape-memory material suspension (Poron) derived from the Utopia Béryllium tweeter; it reduces distortion between 2000 Hz and 3000 Hz, a range to which the human ear is particularly sensitive.
In terms of measurements, the Theva N°3-D delivers a sensitivity of 91 dB (2,83V/1m), a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum of 2,9 ohms) and a frequency response of 100 Hz to 20 kHz (± 3 dB), extending down to 90 Hz at -6 dB. The crossover frequencies are set at 270 Hz and 2700 Hz. It accepts a recommended power of between 40 W and 250 W.
This speaker is aimed at those wishing to build or complete a multichannel Home Cinema system compatible with Dolby Atmos, pairing it with other models from the Theva range (N°1, N°2, N°3, Center, Surround) and a subwoofer such as the SUB 600P. Its French manufacture and careful finishing (attached front panel, screen-printed metallised rings, magnetic grille cover) also make it a choice for enthusiasts attentive to presentation as much as sound performance.

What to check before buying used
On this Atmos floorstander, check the condition of the suspensions on the main driver as well as the vertical effect driver on top, whose directional baffle may have suffered from an impact or unsuitable storage. Inspect the inverted dome of the TNF tweeter, which is fragile if handled roughly, and its Poron suspension, which may stiffen over time. Also examine the cabinet around the port and the top driver, as well as the connection terminals at the rear of the cabinet.
