The Utopia 2022 is a high-end open-back headphone designed and manufactured in France by Focal. It is intended for seated home listening, connected to a headphone amplifier or a dedicated source, for detailed musical reproduction.
The headphones are built around wide-bandwidth drivers fitted with an 'M'-shaped pure Beryllium dome, fully open at the rear: this design promotes natural listening, without marked colouration, with good dynamics and transparency in reproduction. The voice coil combines copper and aluminium, a choice aimed at both a particular sound signature and good long-term reliability. With an impedance of 80 Ohms and a sensitivity of 104 dB SPL, they can be driven by headphone amplifiers of moderate power. Their frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz, and their harmonic distortion remains below 0.2% at 1 kHz for 100 dB SPL.
The construction combines genuine leather, aluminium, recycled forged carbon and honeycomb grilles, with Black Chrome coloured rings, for an assembly that is both technical and carefully finished.

What to check before buying used
On this type of high-end open-back headphone, the condition of the leather earpads deserves close inspection: dryness, cracking or flattened foam affect comfort and fit on the ear. Also check the flexibility of the headband and the absence of play in the metal joints. The Lemo® connectors at the cable ends should click firmly into place without excessive resistance, a sign of the supplied cables being in good condition.
