Description
The Utopia is a high-end open-back headphone designed and manufactured in France by Focal, intended for stationary home listening for high-fidelity enthusiasts. Its design is fully open at the rear of the earcups, an architecture that favours natural sound reproduction over sound isolation.
The headphones feature full-range "M"-shaped dome drivers in pure Beryllium, a material recognised for its rigidity and lightness, two properties that enable faithful reproduction across the entire audible spectrum. The voice coil combines copper and aluminium, a choice that contributes to the transducer's reliability over time. In terms of measurements, impedance is 80 Ohms and sensitivity is 104 dB SPL / 1 mW at 1 kHz, with harmonic distortion below 0.2% at 1 kHz / 100 dB SPL. The frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz, a wide range that comfortably covers the human audible spectrum.
The construction combines genuine leather, aluminium, recycled forged carbon and honeycomb grilles, with Black Chrome finishing rings. These headphones are aimed at demanding listeners equipped with a hi-fi system or a headphone amplifier capable of exploiting their full potential, in a quiet home listening environment.
The set is supplied with a 1.5 m cable with an unbalanced 3.5 mm TRS Jack connector, a 3 m cable with a balanced 4-pin XLR connector, a 3.5 mm female to 6.35 mm male Jack adapter, as well as a 25 x 24 x 12 cm carrying case.

What to check before buying used
The genuine leather earpads and headband deserve particular attention: check their suppleness, the absence of cracks and a good fit, as these are the elements most exposed to wear on this type of headphone. Also check the condition of the Lemo® connectors at both ends of the supplied cables, as well as the electrical continuity on both channels. Slight play or an unstable connection at this point may indicate intensive use or repeated handling of the detachable cables.
