The Fostex T20RP MkIII is an open-back professional headphone intended for studio applications, a successor to the RP series developed by Fostex since 1977. It relies on the proprietary RP Diaphragm technology, a flat-structure driver design protected by more than twenty patents worldwide.
The principle is based on a copper-plated metal sheet etched onto a polyimide film, itself set within a series of neodymium magnets. This planar diaphragm architecture differs from the conventional dynamic transducers used in most consumer headphones, and aims to offer improved sensitivity as well as more precise sound reproduction.
Fostex presents the T20RP as capable of delivering a natural, low-coloration sound, with ample, distortion-free bass, meeting the expectations of studio monitoring use, where fidelity of reproduction takes precedence over spectacular effect.
The earcups feature automatic adjustment intended to ensure stable positioning on the head while isolating from ambient noise, a useful feature during prolonged listening or recording sessions.

What to check before buying used
On these orthodynamic headphones, the earpads often age less quickly than on a consumer model, but should be checked for foam condition and suppleness of the synthetic leather at the seams. The very thin RP diaphragm is vulnerable to direct impact, and excessive pressure on the grille can deform it irreversibly: it is best to check for absence of rubbing noise or localised distortion when listening. Also check the play and flexibility of the self-adjusting headband, as well as the condition of the cables and their exit points at the earcups.
