Description
The Classic VIII SM is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker, designed to be installed on stands in a living room or dedicated listening room. It combines a 200 mm IsoFlare point source bass/midrange driver and a 25 mm magnesium dome compression tweeter, paired with a downward-firing BassTrax port fitted with a Tractrix diffuser.
The IsoFlare driver uses a multi-fibre cone and a FyneFlute surround, with a ferrite magnet system. The low-loss bi-wireable passive crossover combines a 2nd order low-pass with a 1st order high-pass, with a crossover frequency set at 1.8 kHz; its components benefit from Cryo-Lite cryogenic treatment. The frequency response extends from 34 Hz to 34 kHz (-6 dB typical in-room), with a sensitivity of 91 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. Continuous power handling reaches 90 W RMS, with a peak handling of 360 W, for a recommended amplification of between 30 and 180 W RMS.
This speaker is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts seeking a bookshelf format capable of being driven by moderate-power amplifiers, thanks to its 91 dB sensitivity and 8 ohm impedance. What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the FyneFlute surround on the 200 mm IsoFlare driver: a tear or sagging affects bass performance. Inspect the walnut cabinet, particularly the corners and veneer around the BassTrax port, as well as the fixing of the Tractrix diffuser. Listen to the magnesium dome tweeter across the full treble range to rule out any crackling, and check that the bi-wireable crossover components have not suffered from damp storage despite their Cryo-Lite treatment.
