Gold Note PH-5.2

The PH-5.2 is an analogue phono preamplifier designed to amplify and correct the signal from an MM or MC cartridge before it passes into an amplifier or a line preamplifier. It accepts both types of cartridge via its RCA inputs and allows the settings of two separate cartridges, one MM and one MC, to be stored and selected directly from the menu.

The unit offers several switchable equalisation curves, RIAA, Decca London and American Columbia, each available in an Enhanced version to extend the frequency response up to 50 kHz. The load setting can be selected from nine values ranging from 10 Ω to 47 kΩ, with a fixed capacitance of 220 pF, while gain can be set from 40 dB in MM to 65 dB in MC across three levels: this flexibility allows the preamplifier to be precisely matched to the cartridge in use, a necessary condition for faithful reproduction. The signal path relies on discrete components and relays for switching between settings, an architecture designed to limit interference with the audio signal. With a signal-to-noise ratio of 89 dB, a dynamic range of 105 dB and total harmonic distortion below 0.05%, the unit aims for a clean reproduction of the micro-details cut into the record.

This phono preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable fitted with an MM or MC cartridge who wish to fine-tune reproduction according to the type of recording being played, particularly collectors of old pressings using equalisation curves other than the standard RIAA.
