Description
The GoldenEar BRX, or Bookshelf Reference X, is a two-way compact bookshelf speaker fitted with passive radiators. It draws on certain technologies used in the brand's Reference models, transposed here into a smaller cabinet intended for small to medium-sized installations.
The top of the spectrum is handled by a folded ribbon AMT (Air-Motion Transformer) tweeter, a technology that uses an accordion-folded diaphragm rather than a conventional dome, generally valued for its ability to reproduce detail with precision. The bass-midrange is a 15 cm polypropylene cone woofer, complemented by two 16.5 cm planar passive radiators which have no voice coil but vibrate in response to internal cabinet pressure, helping to extend low-frequency reproduction without increasing the size of the speaker.
This combination of high sensitivity and a wide recommended power range means the BRX can be considered with anything from an entry-level integrated amplifier to more generous electronics. Its compact bookshelf format makes it suitable for installations where available space is limited, on a cabinet or on stands, for stereo listening or as the main speakers in a small living room.

What to check before buying used
Check the integrity of the planar passive radiators: their diaphragm, which has no voice coil, should remain supple and free from tears or sagging around the peripheral suspensions. Also inspect the folded ribbon AMT tweeter, a delicate transducer whose folds can become distorted after an impact or past electrical overload. An examination of the woofer's polypropylene cone (cracks, separation from the basket) and of the cabinet (veneer, corners) completes the pre-purchase inspection.
