Description
The BRX is a bookshelf speaker from GoldenEar, originally designed as a nearfield monitor for professional mixing applications. Its designers' aim was to offer a compact, stand-mountable format capable of precise sound reproduction and three-dimensional imaging close to that of the brand's Triton floorstanding speakers, the reference for high definition.
To achieve this, GoldenEar transposed part of the technology developed for the Triton Reference into a smaller cabinet. The BRX's woofer/midrange driver thus adopts an almost identical design to the 6-inch unit used on the Triton Reference. The tweeter is also the same high-velocity folded ribbon (HVFR) high-frequency radiator as that of the Triton Reference, a technology that is costly to produce but recognised for its speed and precision.
The cabinet also incorporates two planar low-frequency radiators mounted on the sides, in an inertially balanced configuration. This arrangement properly loads the woofer/midrange driver, freeing the midrange from cabinet effects while contributing to extended bass for such a compact format, without requiring a separate subwoofer.
This positioning makes it a speaker aimed at demanding listeners seeking precise sound imaging and high-definition reproduction in a small footprint, whether in a small stereo setup, for nearfield monitoring, or as a complement to multichannel systems where floor space is limited.
What to check before buying used
On the BRX, check the integrity of the two side-mounted planar radiators: a dented or detached membrane upsets the bass balance. Also check the woofer/midrange driver (no scraping noise, supple suspension) and the tweeter's HVFR ribbon, which is fragile to impact and should never be touched with a finger. Finally, examine the cabinet and the removable protective grille, whose fixings can loosen over time.
