Description
The T66 Tower is the largest floorstanding speaker in the GoldenEar range: a so-called semi-active 3-way speaker, meaning the bass register has its own onboard amplification stage while the midrange and treble remain powered by the system's amplifier. This division of labour delivers extension in the lower part of the spectrum that a fully passive floorstanding speaker of this size would not achieve, without requiring an oversized amplifier.
The bass section relies on two 12.7 × 22.9 cm active woofers supported by two 20.3 × 30.5 cm passive radiators, the whole driven by a 1,000 W peak DSP amplifier. This architecture explains the stated low-frequency limit of 29 Hz, which covers most of the bass register of both orchestral music and film soundtracks. At the other end, the HVFR AMT tweeter, a folded ribbon whose diaphragm expels air laterally, reaches up to 25 kHz and stands out for its high sensitivity and low moving mass, ensuring speed on transients. Between the two, two 11.4 cm die-cast aluminium midrange-woofers handle vocals and instrument body.
With a width of 190 mm for a height of 1,240 mm, the cabinet remains slim despite the internal volume required by the bass transducers. The 91 dB sensitivity at 4 Ω makes it accessible to modestly powered amplifiers, with the recommended range starting at 20 W; however, the 4 Ω load requires electronics that are stable into low impedances if the upper end of the range is used, up to 500 W. The T66 Tower is suited to medium to large rooms, for stereo listening as well as front channels in a multichannel system, for a listener who wants deep bass without adding a separate subwoofer.

What to check before buying used
When buying this type of speaker used, a few checks are specific to it. The amplified module housed in the base is the element to check first: power it on, listen for the absence of hum at idle, check the level consistency between the two towers, and confirm the DSP controls work, a silent bass channel points to an electronics fault rather than a driver fault. The large passive radiators should be checked by hand: the suspension must remain supple and centred, with no tears or detached surrounds. The tweeter's folded ribbon is mechanically fragile, inspect the grille and avoid any contact with the diaphragm. Finally, on a 29.5 kg tower, the cabinet edges and decoupling spikes often suffer during transport: examine the corners, the flatness of the base, and the condition of the terminal blocks.
