Description
The Triton Seven is a floorstanding speaker from GoldenEar's Triton series, offered in a more compact format than its larger siblings. It marks a break from the range: it is the first Triton to dispense with a built-in amplified subwoofer, and therefore operates as a fully passive speaker, driven by a conventional external amplifier.
Its construction is built around a narrow front baffle, a choice that limits immediate reflections around the drivers and favours a soundstage detached from the cabinet. Two 5-1/4 inch cast-basket woofer-midranges flank the tweeter in a D'Appolito configuration, an arrangement managed by a Linkwitz-Riley type crossover designed to make the transition between drive units as seamless as possible. The tweeter is GoldenEar's own High Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR) folded ribbon design, a technology found throughout the series and aimed at highly resolved reproduction of the top end. Bass is complemented by two inertially balanced planar passive radiators mounted on the sides of the cabinet, tasked with extending low-end reach without any onboard electronics.
This format suits rooms where an imposing floorstander would be difficult to accommodate, while still aiming for a level of refinement compatible with a well-regarded stereo system. Its passive nature makes it easy to pair: an integrated amplifier or a power amplifier is sufficient. It also finds a place as the main speakers in a multichannel system, where its ribbon tweeter and dynamics suit both music and film soundtracks equally well.
What to check before buying used
On this model, the side-firing passive radiators deserve close inspection: their flat diaphragm is exposed on the sides and does not tolerate knocks or finger pressure well, a deformed panel affecting bass output. The folded ribbon tweeter is also fragile, to be checked visually and by ear on treble-rich passages, without ever touching it. Finally, check the suspensions of both woofer-midranges and the condition of the connection terminals, as well as the cabinet edges and base, often marked during house moves given the size of this floorstander.
